Aysén has rock. Lots of rock. Centuries of volcanic and glacial activity left walls, boulders, and formations of basalt and granite scattered across the entire territory. But let's be honest about what exists near Mañihuales: established sport climbing infrastructure is minimal. And that's precisely what makes it interesting.
Patagonian rock: every route is different, every ascent unrepeatable.
The only documented equipped sector near the Mañihuales area is on Cerro La Zaranda, roughly 30 km north of Villa Mañihuales along the Carretera Austral. It's a 1,830-metre rock face just 15 minutes on foot from the road. In recent years Chilean climbers Raimundo De Andraca and Fernanda Carabias established Sin obstáculos no hay camino (600 m, 5.12– / A1), one of the most notable big wall lines in the region. The mountain has been building an alpinistic history for decades; it's only beginning to appear on the sport climbing radar.
Climbing in this area is part of everyday life — not a packaged tourist activity.
Further north, between Mañihuales and Villa Amengual, rises Cerro Picacho (1,883 m). It's a mountain that catches your eye from the road: a spire of rock cutting up through the forest. Claudio Hopperdietzel, a landmark figure in Aysén mountaineering, made the first solo ascent in 1987. Since then routes have been established on the northwest and south faces, but the northeast wall remains unclimbed — one of the most compelling alpine projects still open in the area. For alpinists with ambition, this is a summit worth watching.
For those seeking more developed sport climbing, Aysén offers solid options a few hours from Fundo La Pampita. Coyhaique (approx. 1 hour south) has over 100 equipped routes in several sectors, some reachable by bike from the city centre. And Villa Cerro Castillo (approx. 3 hours south) is one of the epicentres of the sport in Chile: over 400 equipped routes across 6 sectors, with exceptional rock quality and options from beginner level to serious projects.
